Ocular complications of diabetes

Silent disease, diabetes can affect all organs, but in particular the blood vessels, nerves, kidneys and eyes.

Diabetes is a problem with sugar regulation, leading to hyperglycaemia, i.e. abnormally high levels of glucose in the blood. If the sugar level in the bloodstream remains chronically high, this can lead to problems with the blood vessels and capillaries over a period of months or even years.

This can affect any organ, but certain organs are particularly at risk, such as the kidneys, nerves and eyes. The part of the eye that is particularly at risk is the retina.

"When you have diabetes, you need to be alert to any changes in your vision and have regular check-ups with your ophthalmologist. The earlier retinopathy is treated, the greater the chances of limiting the damage to the patient's vision.
