Our services for diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer

1. Early detection

Early detection of breast cancer is an essential part of breast cancer prevention. The best-known method is mammography, which involves taking an X-ray of the breast. Mammography can detect very small tumours even before they are palpable or other symptoms or pain appear.

For women over 50, regular and systematic mammography is recommended to increase the chances of cure and life expectancy. The age group between 50 and 70, determined by the cantonal screening programme, is recommended to have a regular check-up.

2. Diagnosis

In order to make an accurate diagnosis of breast cancer and thus have the best possible chance of cure, there are various examinations to detect breast abnormalities (palpable lumps, deformation, pain). Among other things, mammography, ultrasound, MRI or PET-CT scans are used.

3. Breast cancer surgery

Breast cancer is different for every patient. Whether surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, hormone therapy or other targeted therapies - the treatment is individual and the treatment plan is tailored to the patient. The therapy proposal, which is worked out in a multidisciplinary colloquium, contains details of the treatment and the time schedule. In each case, your doctor will explain in detail the options appropriate to your condition and the nurse in charge of breast cancer will accompany you during the treatment.

At the Centre du Sein, the following treatments are available for our patients:

  • Breast surgery, including oncoplastic surgery, mastectomy.
  • Reconstructive surgery
  • Radiotherapy
  • Systemic treatment (hormone therapy, adjuvant chemotherapy, neoadjuvant systemic treatment, anti-HER2 immunotherapy).
  • Fertility ward counselling
  • The Centre du Sein continues to be an active part of research and is always looking for innovative methods to advance the cure.

4. Breast reconstruction

Breast surgery and breast reconstruction is a very emotional subject. At the Centre du Sein, patients are cared for by a breast cancer nurse during this time. Thanks to the interdisciplinary collaboration between the doctors and the clinics, patients can opt for breast reconstruction and thus feel comfortable in their skin again.

5. Aftercare

Follow-up care is also an important part of the treatment pathway. This goes far beyond the medical check-ups. The Centre du Sein has affiliated a Centre du soin de support. This promotes a holistic approach to recovery.

6. The Tumour Board: the guarantee of a good diagnosis

At the Centre du Sein, a multidisciplinary colloquium, the Tumour Board, is held every week. It consists of one specialist from each of the disciplines concerned: Gynaecology, Breast Surgery, Radiology, Oncology, Radio-Oncology, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Pathology, Psychiatry, Physiotherapy and Breast Cancer Consultants. Here, the clinical situation of each patient is discussed in order to determine a screening strategy, make a definite diagnosis or decide together on the best treatment options (surgery, radiotherapy, systemic treatment ...).

The Tumour Board takes place every Tuesday from 17:15 to 19:00.

7. The second opinion

The second opinion is not a vote of no confidence in the health professional: its purpose is to improve the patient's information so that she can give informed consent to the proposed treatment (Law of 29 May 1985 on Public Health (PHG) and Law of 10 February 2004 on Assistance and Integration Measures for Persons with Disabilities (HMG)).

When should you see a specialist?

Often breast cancer causes no symptoms, signs or pain for a long period of time. Depending on the type of breast cancer, it can take time for it to reach a palpable size (Ø approx. 1 cm). Regular examinations are therefore important.  Here is a list of possible abnormalities for which you should consult a specialist.

  • A mostly painless lump or hard spot in your breast
  • skin changes (inflammation, redness, orange peel skin)
  • a retraction or thickening of the skin (especially around the nipple)
  • changes in the nipple (inflammation)
  • a sudden difference in size between the two breasts
  • discharge from the nipple (outside pregnancy or breastfeeding).
  • swollen lymph nodes in the armpit / under the collarbone / on one side of the breastbone
  • unexplained weight loss
