Gait analysis systems and gait therapy at Swiss Medical Network

Lyra Gait

Clinique Valmont has acquired the Lyra Gait training device, specially developed to facilitate the rehabilitation and restoration of walking in patients suffering from stroke or other degenerative neurological conditions such as Parkinson's disease or multiple sclerosis.

Which patients is this therapy designed for?

The Lyra Gait device can be used to recondition or restore walking in patients who have lost it, such as stroke victims or those suffering from Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis or spinal cord injuries, for example.

How it works

In the event of a stroke or cerebral haemorrhage, the brain is deprived of oxygen and can be irreparably damaged. 2 out of 3 people then suffer a severe loss of motor skills.
Rapid, intensive and repetitive stimulation of motor skills is a key factor in successful rehabilitation. The Lyra device recreates the movement of walking, while maintaining an intensity level tailored to each patient. Through this effective therapy, patients are supported at every stage of their rehabilitation, regaining mobility and endurance in their daily lives.
Lyra Gait has been specially developed to facilitate walking rehabilitation, enabling stroke victims to regain motor skills that were previously difficult to achieve.

What are the benefits?

In the event of a stroke, neurons are irreversibly damaged and die, leading to the appearance of after-effects. We now know that the brain is capable of plasticity: the remaining neurons have the capacity to reorganise themselves and remodel their connections to compensate for the deficits caused by the stroke. Intense repetition of certain movements leads to a phenomenon of cerebral plasticity around the lesion, which will encourage relearning and recovery from lesions.

Current studies show that a high dose of step repetition - around 300 steps per session - is necessary to recover a normal walking pattern and activate this cerebral plasticity phenomenon. In conventional therapy, it is difficult to take so many steps with a patient, as they have to be carried, secured and their deficits corrected. With Lyra Gait, the patient is supported, weighted down by the harness, in a safe environment, and the therapist can concentrate on correcting the patient's gait.

The Lyra Gait device is certainly the best currently available on the market. Its ease of use and success are recognised by all the doctors who use it.
