Cataracts under the microscope
Read the interview with Doctor Elodie Trichet, FMH specialist in ophthalmology and ophthalmosurgery.
Cataracts are an eye disease in which the normally clear lens of the eye becomes increasingly opaque.
In most cases, cataracts are age-related, but they can also be the result of metabolic or inflammatory diseases or eye injuries. "From the age of 65, 1 in 5 people are affected by the disease".
Cataracts are treated by surgery, during which the opaque lens is removed and an artificial lens is implanted.
Dr Elodie Trichet, a cataract specialist, explains the importance of the operation and the development of implants: "Nearly 30,000 cataract operations are performed every year in Switzerland".
