Settimanale Azione - Defending the frailty of the elderly

Medicine: a campaign by the Injury Prevention Bureau against the risk of falling at home or during hospitalization

«Every year about 90 thousand elderly people fall and suffer injuries so serious that they require medical treatment or hospital care, and more than 1,600 people over the age of 65 lose their lives as a result of falls." These are the figures from the Injury Prevention Bureau (IPU) highlighting how falls represent a major public health challenge due to the often devastating injury consequences of those affected that result in: "Long hospital stays, limited mobility, loss of autonomy or early transfer to a home for the elderly».

In addition to personal suffering, they generate annual costs in the order of billions. These are the reasons that led the Upi to launch the «StopCadute» campaign, which in its pilot phase (between 2019 and 2022) was systematically aimed at integrating interprofessional prevention targeting people over 65 into the health care of some pilot cantons (St. Gallen, Bern, Graubünden and Zurich).
