With the exception of photos of field hockey players smiling at the camera with missing teeth, sportsmen's teeth are rarely a media topic.

In relation to sports, we actually hear very little about teeth. In sports medicine, as in medicine in general, teeth are often overlooked, although for people like athletes who want to push their bodies to peak performance, damage to the dental area can often be associated with very unfavorable symptoms. Several examples and studies from the sports world clearly demonstrate this: the dental health of athletes is not always “at the level” where it should be, and dental care is often forgotten or neglected. However, dental and periodontal health is closely related to physical performance. Disorders such as chronic inflammatory processes and reduced masticatory capacity often affect the ability to train and compete.
