Data collected by the World Health Organisation (WHO) indicate that the share of people over 60 is growing faster than that of other age groups. This means that older people will make up about a quarter of the world's population, with growth rates varying greatly depending on the region in question.
In Switzerland, too, people are living longer and, according to the European Statistical Office Eurostat, Ticino is at the top of European longevity, with an average life expectancy of 85.7 years (until 2019 the record was held by Madrid, now in second place with 85.4 years). However, the problem that the elderly population has in common is polypharmacy, which is on the rise precisely because of massive ageing.
