Ticino Welcome - Prostheses can also be revised

Dr. med. Mauro Molina, a specialist in orthopedic surgery and traumatology of the musculoskeletal system and FMH member, tells us about prosthetic revision surgery, the purpose of which is to provide support to patients who have experienced partial or total failure of a previously performed prosthetic implant.

A question of particular interest to patients undergoing arthroplasty concerns the durability of hip or knee implants. What is the situation in this regard?

«Arthroplasty surgery, as it is known, consists of replacing the anatomical structures of the hip or knee, now damaged, with the implantation of mechanical components that allow the joint to return its functionality and resolve pain. As surgical materials and techniques have evolved, there has been a significant increase in the survival of implants over time. In particular, today new prosthesis surfaces allow better fixation to the bone, new generation polyethylene has less wear than previously used, and biomedical ceramic has greater strength; new polyethylene/ceramic, and ceramic/ceramic bearings have a very low wear coefficient and have contributed to longer implant survival.»
