Ticino Welcome - Robotics in the service of surgery

Dr. med. Dario Giunchi, a specialist in orthopedic surgery and traumatology of the musculoskeletal system, FMH member and active at Clinica Ars Medica in Gravesano explains how the use of the VELYS robot, recently acquired by the facility, is an important innovation for knee prosthetic surgery.

Over the past few months, Clinica Ars Medica has been equipped with Johnson&Johnson MedTech's VELYS™ robot for knee replacement. What does it consist of?
«It is an operating system to support orthopedic knee surgeries. Surgical specialists during prosthesis implantation surgery and through a dedicated digital display can view personalized data on the anatomy and function of the patient's knee. In fact, thanks to special sensors, the robot detects in real time and with particular precision the position, alignment and stability of the knee; these are fundamental factors that, thanks to the robotic arm, allow further improvement in the precision and quality of the surgery, personalizing the implantation. It is crucial to emphasize that the robot does not operate independently, but assists the surgeon at every stage of the surgery, while leaving the surgeon in full control of the operation.»
