Could you tell us about your career path and why you chose to become an ophthalmologist?

I studied medicine at the University of Lausanne. During my studies, I met Professor Francis Munier, who was head of clinic at the time at the Jules-Gonin Ophthalmic Hospital in Lausanne. He is a great man with an unbridled desire to pass on his knowledge. He was passionate about genetics, among other things. During my studies, I started my medical thesis on eye genetics. I didn't have a turnkey project. I had to find a family cataract, search the Ophthalmic Hospital archives, make sure I had a significant number of family members, take blood samples from them and carry out the genetic analyses under the mentorship of Professor Daniel Schorderet. At the end of my studies, I spent 2 years in Canada, in Toronto, doing a fellowship in eye genetics with Professor Elise Héon. I returned to Switzerland and continued my ophthalmology training at the Jules-Gonin Eye Hospital before joining Swiss Visio in 2014 in Neuchâtel.

Where does your passion for the retina come from?

It would seem crazy to think that there are so many sub-specialities for such a small organ. And yet. You have specialists for all the structures of the eye. The medical retina fascinated me to no end. Doctors Ambresin and Mantel, who were in charge of the retina unit at the hospital, also had something to do with it. Today's treatments are absolutely innovative.

Is there a particular moment in your career that has stood out for you?

I can think of 2 events. The first was with Professor Munier, who had to perform an enucleation on a young boy before Easter. This child showed a maturity in the face of the situation that left a lasting impression on me. The second event was my 2 years in Toronto with Professor Elise Héon. What a woman!

With the rising cost of healthcare, we're hearing a lot of patients saying they're «reluctant» to seek treatment unless it's an emergency. What are your thoughts on this?

It makes no sense to me that, in an industrialised country like Switzerland, we should be asking ourselves this question when, compared with other European countries, we are in a country where the government finances the least in relation to its gross domestic product.
