The most common health risks are infectious diseases such as the common cold, malaria, dengue fever and diarrhoea. Injuries and accidents are also not uncommon when travelling.
Standard vaccinations such as tetanus, diphtheria, whooping cough and polio should be up to date. In addition, the hepatitis A vaccine is essential for all tropical and sub-tropical countries. The other vaccines required depend very much on the destination and/or type of travel or activity: against yellow fever, meningitis, typhoid, rabies and Japanese encephalitis.
The most important protection is good hygiene. This means drinking only boiled or bottled water and refraining from eating raw fruit and vegetables, unless they are peeled. Avoid ice cubes, which are not always made with mineral water. It is also advisable to wash your hands regularly and use disinfectants.
Good preparation is essential for a healthy trip. Take advantage of Dr Bassi's advice and find out about the health risks specific to your destination. You'll be able to leave with peace of mind and be well prepared for your next trip. Stay healthy and enjoy your trip!
