As part of the Movember campaign, a Dr Daneshpour, a urology specialist, talks about new developments in urology. He discusses modern diagnostic and treatment options that are specifically geared towards men's health, with a particular focus on prostate cancer and bladder problems.
Particularly exciting and promising are methods such as high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU). These gentle therapeutic procedures have now become established in the treatment of prostate carcinomas and offer enormous advantages. In HIFU therapy, high-frequency ultrasound is used in a targeted manner to destroy tumour tissue while sparing the surrounding healthy tissue. I have personally had very good experiences with this method – patients benefit from a minimally invasive treatment with significantly fewer side effects and a fast recovery time. Such innovative approaches enable us to significantly increase the quality of treatment and improve the quality of life of patients.
Minimally invasive procedures offer significant advantages for the treatment of both prostate and bladder problems. They considerably reduce the rate of infection and significantly shorten the length of hospital stays. For example, HIFU therapy for prostate cancer takes about 45 minutes, whereas conventional surgery used to take up to three hours. The length of the inpatient stay has also been greatly reduced – from a week to just two days. These procedures not only enable faster recovery, but also a gentler treatment overall, significantly improving patients' quality of life.
Robotic surgery and other technical developments are revolutionising urological surgery by making procedures significantly more precise and less invasive.
Early and precise diagnosis means that tumours can be detected and treated at an early stage, significantly increasing the chances of successful therapy. These developments enable better long-term treatment outcomes and significantly improve patients' quality of life.
