What's new in urology? Trends and innovations

Interview with Dr Amir Daneshpour

As part of the Movember campaign, a Dr Daneshpour, a urology specialist, talks about new developments in urology. He discusses modern diagnostic and treatment options that are specifically geared towards men's health, with a particular focus on prostate cancer and bladder problems.

What new technologies and treatment methods are currently available in urology?

Particularly exciting and promising are methods such as high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU). These gentle therapeutic procedures have now become established in the treatment of prostate carcinomas and offer enormous advantages. In HIFU therapy, high-frequency ultrasound is used in a targeted manner to destroy tumour tissue while sparing the surrounding healthy tissue. I have personally had very good experiences with this method – patients benefit from a minimally invasive treatment with significantly fewer side effects and a fast recovery time. Such innovative approaches enable us to significantly increase the quality of treatment and improve the quality of life of patients.

How do modern diagnostic procedures improve the early detection of prostate cancer?

Modern diagnostic procedures such as MRI-fusion biopsy are revolutionising the early detection of prostate cancer. In this procedure, we first create detailed MRI images to identify suspicious areas in the prostate. With the help of fusion biopsy, we can combine these images with ultrasound images, which enables precise needle guidance. This enables us to precisely and accurately puncture the suspicious carcinoma sites, which significantly improves the accuracy of the diagnosis. This method is a major advance because it enables more accurate detection of cancer, avoiding unnecessary biopsies and allowing treatment to be targeted more effectively. I am convinced that this takes early detection to a new level.

What advantages do minimally invasive procedures offer for the treatment of prostate and bladder problems?

Minimally invasive procedures offer significant advantages for the treatment of both prostate and bladder problems. They considerably reduce the rate of infection and significantly shorten the length of hospital stays. For example, HIFU therapy for prostate cancer takes about 45 minutes, whereas conventional surgery used to take up to three hours. The length of the inpatient stay has also been greatly reduced – from a week to just two days. These procedures not only enable faster recovery, but also a gentler treatment overall, significantly improving patients' quality of life.

To what extent are robotic surgery and other technical developments changing urological surgery?

Robotic surgery and other technical developments are revolutionising urological surgery by making procedures significantly more precise and less invasive.

How can men benefit from these new developments in urology?

Early and precise diagnosis means that tumours can be detected and treated at an early stage, significantly increasing the chances of successful therapy. These developments enable better long-term treatment outcomes and significantly improve patients' quality of life.
