Work Experience

Dr Ihsan Inan obtained his doctorate in medicine from Ege University in Izmir, Turkey in 1987.

In 1991, he began his training in general surgery in the canton of Neuchâtel, which he completed at the Fribourg Cantonal Hospital in 1998 under the guidance of his mentor, Dr Panayotis Petropoulos who is known as one of the global pioneers in the field of laparascopic surgical techniques. He assisted Dr Petropoulos through the genesis and development of minimally invasive surgical techniques, which have now become the standard in contemporary surgery.

In 1998, Dr Inan continued his surgical career in the academic environment at Hôpitaux Universitaires de Genève (HUG) where he was appointed Chief Registrar for Abdominal Surgery, a post that he occupied until 2008. During his time there, he obtained his FMH certification in surgery in 1999 and his FMH certification in abdominal surgery in 2006.

He also continued his work developing new minimally invasive and robotic technologies for abdominal surgery, particularly in the area of colorectal, gastroesophageal, and biliopancreatic surgery, as well as abdominal wall and complex hiatal hernia surgery.

During his university career, he participated, conceived and ran various clinical research projects. He was responsible for developing outpatient surgery services for the department of surgery as well as project development for the use of robotic surgery in abdominal surgery.

In 2008, Dr Inan decided to continue his career in private practice and joined the Clinique Générale-Beaulieu in Geneva.
There, he introduced the ERAS (Enhanced Recovery After Surgery) programme, which aims to improve patient recovery following major surgery. Taking charge of the project in October 2013, he and his team succeeded in gaining official certification for the clinic in June 2014.

As a holistic complement to the ERAS programme, he introduced the concept of multimodal prehabilitation, which aims to ensure that patients are optimally prepared for the day of surgery from a physical, nutritional and cognitive perspective.

Dr Inan participated in the development of a post-operative pain management technique as part of a global strategy of opioid-free or opioid-sparing, in conjunction with the anaesthesia team. Since 2008, he has been developing and teaching techniques of neuromuscular blocs under ultrasound guidance during surgery in order to eliminate or reduce the use of morphine derivatives.

In the field of robotic surgery, since 2006, Dr Inan has been one of the pioneers in developing robotic techniques in digestive surgery, particularly for hernias of the abdominal wall. He is an expert educator, proctor and lecturer who teaches robotic surgery internationally.
