Protect your eyes in summer

We're all looking forward to the sunny weather, but our eyes, like our skin, need to be protected from the sun.

It's easier to forget about protecting our eyes from UV rays than our skin when the sun comes out.

Doctor Victoire Hurand, Head of Clinic at Swiss Visio Montchoisi, explains the dangers of different types of UV and how we can protect ourselves effectively.

Types d'UV

UVA

The most numerous, they act on ageing. In the eye, the cornea and crystalline lens are capable of absorbing a large proportion of them.

UVB

They are absorbed directly by the skin and cause sunburn. They are also absorbed by the lens.

UVC

They are mostly blocked by the ozone layer, but are still very present at high altitudes.

How can I protect my eyes?

By applying the following advice, you can considerably reduce your exposure to harmful UV rays and protect your eye health:

  • Choose a pair of UV400 category glasses
  • Choose polarised lenses
  • Wear a wide-brimmed hat
  • If possible, stay out of the sun between 10am and 4pm, when UV rays are strongest
