GLA:D® physiotherapy for knee and hip osteoarthritis

The abbreviation stands for «Good Life with OsteoArthritis in Denmark». The aim of the program is to enable a good quality of life despite osteoarthritis and to delay or even avoid surgery.

Osteoarthritis of the knee and hip is one of the most common joint diseases. Therapeutic guidelines have been drawn up for treatment, which recommend a combination of advice, exercises and, if necessary, weight reduction.

To this end, GLA:D was launched in Denmark in 2013. The abbreviation stands for «Good Life with OsteoArthritis in Denmark». The aim of the program is to enable a good quality of life despite osteoarthritis and to delay or even avoid surgery. In Switzerland, patients with hip or knee osteoarthritis have also been able to be treated with the GLA:D osteoarthritis program since 2019.

Procedure and content of the therapy
The GLA:D osteoarthritis programme begins with three individual sessions, during which the current condition is assessed and standardized tests are carried out. The evidence-based exercise program is also instructed. This is followed by 12 group training sessions with strengthening, mobilization and mobility exercises (twice a week). At the same time, participants take part in two theory blocks to deepen their knowledge of osteoarthritis and its treatment. The course concludes with an individual appointment consisting of an evaluation (including a final report on the progress of therapy) and advice on further exercise behavior.

People who are interested in participating in GLA:D need a physiotherapy prescription for GLA:D from their doctor (with the note 2x9 GLA:D) and can then register at the physiotherapy department of Privatklinik Bethanien.

Further information on GLA:D can be found in the flyer or here.
