Musculoskeletal rehabilitation

The aim of musculoskeletal rehabilitation is for you - or more precisely, your musculoskeletal system - to regain its original functionality and thus its full range of motion. You will also learn how to adopt good ergonomic behaviour and what serves as prophylaxis.

What is musculoskeletal rehabilitation?

Every musculoskeletal rehabilitation programme begins with a diagnosis relevant to the musculoskeletal area. Musculoskeletal rehabilitation primarily takes place in an active form. The following forms of therapy and measures are used in particular:

Depending on the diagnosis, additional forms of treatment and measures may also be useful:

  • Balneotherapy
  • Nutritional counselling
  • Aids counselling and dispensing as well as corresponding training
  • Ergonomic measures
  • Medication and interventional pain therapy
  • Orthopaedic technology and prosthetics
  • Physical therapy
  • Psychological counselling and psychoeducation
  • Rehabilitative care
  • Social counselling

Musculoskeletal rehabilitation or rehabilitation of the musculoskeletal system deals with the treatment of functional, ability and activity limitations of the musculoskeletal system in the event of illness, after accidents and after operations. The following areas can be affected:

  • Mobility and stability of the joints
  • Movement patterns when walking
  • Coordination and control of voluntary movements
  • Muscle endurance
  • Muscle strength
  • Muscle tone
  • Proprioceptive disorders in walking and movement function
  • Pain in the areas of the musculoskeletal system
  • Bone stability

What are the aims of musculoskeletal rehabilitation?

Musculoskeletal rehabilitation aims to help you regain your original functional ability. You will learn how to behave ergonomically in everyday life and at work and which prophylactic measures make sense. The aim of rehabilitation is for you to regain your ability to carry out all of your everyday professional and social activities. In musculoskeletal rehabilitation, individual rehabilitation goals are set for each patient. This takes place at the beginning as part of a primary interdisciplinary assessment.

When is musculoskeletal rehabilitation useful?

Musculoskeletal rehabilitation is recommended after an orthopaedic procedure -i.e. an operation - on large joints. These include shoulders, hips, knees and ankles. The therapy helps you to regain strength and mobility in these joints. You will also be guided as to how much strain and movement is possible and sensible.
