Pollen allergy: Here's what you can do against hay fever

Pollen allergy is the most common allergy in Switzerland. The symptoms are unpleasant and often severely affect the quality of life of those affected. If a pollen allergy remains untreated for a long time, it can develop into allergic asthma. It is therefore important to take the symptoms seriously, regularly monitor the pollen count calendar and protect yourself from the pollen count.

Symptoms of a pollen allergy

Hay fever usually causes coughing, sneezing, itching, inflammation and swelling in the nose and throat and mucus secretion. A pollen allergy can also trigger allergic conjunctivitis, which leads to itchy, reddened and watery eyes. If a pollen allergy is particularly severe, it can also lead to bronchial constriction (asthma). Those who suffer from hay fever often also notice a reduced ability to concentrate and are often tired.

How to protect yourself

Fortunately, you are not helpless against pollen allergies. The symptoms can be significantly alleviated with a few simple tips and tricks. Please note that the following advice does not replace a visit to the doctor. If you suffer from severe pollen allergies, be sure to consult an allergist and do not experiment with medication on your own.

On the go

  • Only spend time outside in the early morning or late evening. Stay indoors during peak periods.
  • Pay attention to the current pollen forecast when choosing your holiday destination.
  • Wear sunglasses and, if necessary, a pollen/hygiene mask.
  • Install a pollen filter in your car.

At home

  • Keep the windows closed and only ventilate briefly for fresh air.
  • Install pollen filters on the windows.
  • Daily vacuuming and dusting help to keep pollen out.

Hygiene

  • Wash your hair every evening.
  • Rinse your nose in the morning and evening with a seawater spray.
  • Remove clothing outside the sleeping and living areas.
  • Don't dry your laundry outdoors.
  • Avoid cigarette smoke (passive and active), as it unnecessarily irritates the airways and increases the sensitivity of your mucous membranes.
  • Use allergy-friendly bed linen.

Nutrition

  • Some foods can trigger cross-allergies in people with pollen allergies. Consult an allergist or nutritionist and avoid such foods.
  • When shopping, look out for allergy-labelled products, as these are particularly suitable for people with allergies and intolerances.
  • Favour foods that are rich in antioxidants and omega-3 fatty acids. These have an anti-inflammatory effect.
  • Avoid foods with a high histamine content. These can exacerbate your symptoms.
  • Drink enough. This not only strengthens your body, but also alleviates symptoms such as a scratchy throat.

Treatments and desensitisation therapies

Hay fever symptoms can be treated with various medications. The most important include antihistamines, which block allergic reactions, and cortisone preparations, which inhibit the production of inflammatory messengers in the cells.

Depending on the severity of the pollen allergy, allergen-specific immunotherapy, known as desensitisation, is also an option. The aim of this is to get the body used to the allergen, build up immunological protection and thus reduce the allergic reactions.

Be sure to discuss your drug treatment with your doctor.
