First organised by the American Cancer Society in 1985, Pink October is an annual event raising awareness of breast cancer and the importance of early prevention. An early identification can significantly improve the prognosis of recovery.
Early detection of breast cancer is of key importance as it significantly increases the chances of recovery. If detected at an early stage, the disease can often be treated more gently and successfully. In addition, the risk of metastases can be reduced. If a genetic predisposition is known, tumours can be detected with the help of regular examinations such as mammograms before they are palpable or symptomatic. However, early detection is fundamentally very important for every woman. One of the most important tools is breast self-examination.
Genetic breast cancer is caused by inherited mutations in certain genes that favour the development of cancer. Several generations of a family are often affected. The best-known risk genes include BRCA1 and BRCA2, whose mutations lead to an increased risk of breast and ovarian cancer.
Women who carry such a genetic mutation often opt for more intensive monitoring for early detection. Preventive measures such as breast tissue removal can also be considered.
