Born in Geneva, Jacques-Alain Witzig began his postgraduate studies at the age of 20. After completing his studies at the Faculty of Medicine in Geneva and a number of internships at the University Hospitals of Geneva, he obtained his medical degree in 1981 and, until 1988, held a number of assistant posts in various departments at the HUG, including the Digestive Surgery Clinic, the Cardiovascular Surgery Clinic, the Thoracic Surgery Clinic and the Urology Clinic. Between 1988 and 1989, he completed a post-graduate training period in the Digestive, Endocrine and Vascular Surgery Department at the Hôpital Cochin in Paris, under the supervision of Professor Y. Chapuis. From 1989 to 1992,Dr Witzig was Assistant Registrar at the Hand Surgery Polyclinic (Prof. M.-C. Marti), the Orthopaedics Clinic (Prof. H. Vasey) and the Digestive Surgery Clinic (Prof. A. Rohner). He was then appointed Senior Registrar at the Digestive Surgery Clinic (Prof. A. Rohner, then Prof. Ph. Morel) from 1992 to 1996. He obtained his doctorate in 1995 and opened his own practice in Geneva in 1996, when he was admitted to the Clinique Générale-Beaulieu.Dr Witzig has a strong practice in laparoscopic surgery, particularly hernia and colorectal surgery. He also has proven experience in robotic surgery, mainly for anti-reflux procedures (Nissen). He has chaired the Geneva Surgeons' Association since 1997, and has served as an arbitrator on the Insurance Arbitration Tribunal since 2005. He is a member of the Swiss Society of Surgeons (SSC), the Swiss Society of Thoracoscopic and Laparoscopic Surgery (ASCLT), the Swiss Association of Independent Physicians Working in Private Clinics and Hospitals (ASMI), the French Association of Surgeons (AFC) and several French laparoscopic surgery societies.Dr Jacques-Alain Witzig is the author of numerous publications in national and international medical journals. He is a regular speaker at Swiss and international conferences, particularly on laparoscopic hernia surgery.
